What is Ground School? Why should I take it?

To become a better pilot, you’ll need both training in the air from the cockpit of an aircraft, as well as training on the ground studying the concepts, theory, and procedures behind aviation. Flying takes place in the air of course. But true learning can only be complete with ground training.

Successful pilots find that for every hour they spend in the air, 3 hours are spent in ground school. FlightInsight is an online ground school serving as your training partner from your first lesson through your final Checkride and beyond!

Ground School can take many forms, including self-study with books and online resources such as those available here. It can involve one-on-one sessions with your flight instructor, or it could be classroom training like the courses offered by FlightInsight. The best option for you is to study however you feel you will learn best.

How long do I have access to the course for? Can I take the course as many times as I want?

Many of our courses are available for lifetime enrollment. This means your access to the course material will never expire. 
Alternatively, many courses have an option for a periodic subscription. If you’re just looking to brush up on a few topics and don’t want the lifetime plan. 
Whatever your plan is, you can take and retake lectures and practice quizzes and tests as many times as you want.

Does your course include an endorsement to take the FAA Knowledge Test?

Yes. The Private, IFR, and Commercial courses include a signed endorsement from a licensed and current CFI as required by 14 CFR Part 61.35(a)(1), 61.103(d) and 61.105 to take the relevant FAA Knowledge Test. When you have completed all lecture modules in the course, you will automatically be emailed a certificate with the endorsement, which you can show to your testing facility on the day of the test.

What are the steps to obtain a Private Pilot License (PPL)?

Most pilots first become licensed by earning their Private Pilot Certificate, issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). You will be required to complete flight training with an approved instructor at a flight school, pass a 60-question multiple-choice knowledge test, and then pass a practical test (or checkride). 
 
You will be required to complete at least 40 hours of flight training, which includes flight in the local area as well as what's known as cross-country flying (flight between two airports). It also includes both time with the instructor and time when you will be flying the aircraft solo!
 
There is an accelerated program known as Part 141 which allows you to complete the license in 35 hours as well at an approved 141 flight school. Remember though, these are minimum hours to complete. Your flight instructor will not move you on to the next step until you are proficient. National averages range around 60-70 hours for students to complete their licenses.

What can I expect from a FlightInsight Ground School?

FlightInsight Ground Schools are taught by certified flight instructors who apply their knowledge and experience to teaching you what you need to know to be a great pilot. The syllabus for each course includes all the topics required to pass both the Knowledge Test and the Checkride. 
 
Many in-person and online ground schools provide similar training, but fall short in developing multiple forms of teaching tools to ensure students are truly grasping new concepts. FlightInsight uses hundreds of detailed slides, graphics, videos, workbooks, and reference files. In addition, textbooks and charts will be used throughout the course. As part of your tuition, you will have access to all of the electronic and hardcopy resources from time you enroll. In this way, class is fully interactive. 
 
FlightInsight courses are designed to provide you with knowledge that will aid you throughout your flying career. You won't simply learn once and then lose it later. The resources you'll be getting will help you in class, but you will refer back to them to help you pass your tests, ace your checkride, and brush up on skills later on as well!

How do I start flight training?

Find a flight school and sign up for flights! The Aircraft Owner's and Pilot's Association (AOPA) has a directory of flight schools you can use to find an airport near you. https://www.aopa.org/learntofly/school/index.cfm
Most flight schools offer what's called a Discovery Flight, often at a discounted rate, to get you up in the air for the first time with an instructor and get a taste of flying. 
 
FlightInsight is not a flight school. We don't offer any in-flight training, but provide ground instruction from certified flight instructors who do train students both in the air and on the ground. Our classes complement the flight training you do with your instructor, and work to make you a better, safer pilot.

Can I access the course from any device?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can. Any computer, tablet, mobile, or other device that has a web browser and an internet connection can be used to access the course. Your progress from one device will be saved so you can pick up where you left off on another device. You can download the course and access it without an internet connection using the Teachable app which our lecture programme is built with. Once you have that app on your device you can login to our course using your credentials and access it wherever you like.

Do I have to start flying before taking classes?

Flight training and ground training go hand in hand. The concepts you learn in the cockpit will be supported by the knowledge you gain in ground school, and vice versa. If you can fly and take ground school at the same time, you’ll see the best results! 
That said, you don’t need to be actively flying yet to take ground school. In fact, the learning you’ll do on the ground in this course will prepare you for your time in the cockpit making your time spent in the air more valuable. Your instructor will be impressed!

I am not based in the United States. Can I take your courses?

Yes! We have students in over 40 countries besides the U.S. The materials are geared towards passing the FAA exam, and some things, such as regulations and specific procedures, don’t apply to flying in all jurisdictions, but in a general sense, flying is flying and students from anywhere in the world can benefit from our training. Having said that, if you are training outside the U.S. and want to learn from us, make sure you are supplementing with some materials that are specific to your country.
